The Southern Shorthaul Railroad was established in December 2003, when the remains of Great Northern Rail Services were purchased by Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia. In August 2020, CLF1, one of the company`s latest acquisitions, was repainted in SSR-black and yellow, the first locomotive to be painted in the scheme in nearly a decade. The company also outperforms and repairs locomotives and rail vehicles at the former Bendigo workshops in Victoria.  It also has maintenance equipment in lithgow State Mine Heritage Park & Railway.   In 2012, SSR founded a subsidiary BRM Leasing. In October 2012, the name was changed to Consolidated Rail Leasing.  Part of the SSR fleet has been made available for leasing via CRL. In 2018, SSR began operating Monster 100+ Wagon Grain trains to South Australia and Victoria to support drought in New South Wales, operations began in June and trains from Victoria began in September. These operations generally used X5 C classes, but locomotives of the SSR, BRM, RL, G, 49 and 45 classes were used and these operations continued until 2019. In 2013, SSR celebrated its 10th anniversary, created a special logo and painted the new SSR class in another variant of the standard yellow and black paint. In December 2013, SSR began operating a container service from Kelso to Port Botany.
